Brewer Position - Silver Spring, MD
Silver Branch is synonymous with Gemütlichkeit—a sense of warmth and camaraderie that lifts spirits and provides a welcoming atmosphere. This warmth and camaraderie spills over into our brewers and the beer we brew. The Brewer will work closely with the Director of Brewing Operations to ensure that Silver Branch Lagerhaus & Biergarten is a high-functioning, quality-first production operation. You will help to organize and implement all facets of beer production and packaging. You will continue to elevate Silver Branch’s standards of organization and cleanliness. You will foster a culture of efficiency while ensuring output of high-quality beer. As a Brewer, you will identify and execute various tasks needed to move the brewery forward in an efficient and flexible manner. As demand for Silver Branch beer grows in the coming months and years, you will work closely with the Director of Brewing Operations and the Senior Operations Manager to increase production without sacrificing quality or limiting taproom activity.
This position is located primarily at our Silver Spring Maryland location, with one or two days a week possibly scheduled at our Warrenton, Virginia location. Mileage will be reimbursed for days scheduled in Virginia.
Responsibilities
● Wort production and brewhouse cleaning.
● Fermentation management, including daily recording of brewing/fermentation data, racking, fining, and carbonating beer.
● Maintain brewing equipment, including boilers, pumps, and tanks.
● Packaging beer in kegs, cans, and firkins.
● Organizing cold storage, maintaining inventories, and preparing shipments.
● Perform cleaning, spent grain management, sanitation, and maintenance of brewery equipment.
● Assisting with raw material inventory management, both physically and digitally in Beer30 or Ohanify.
● Raw materials management, including yeast and malt handling.
● Assisting with wholesale self-distribution.
● In conjunction with the Director of Brewing Operations, plan and implement a quality assurance and quality control program.
● Troubleshoot brewing equipment.
● Actively support the Silver Branch brand of Gemütlichkeit by warmly representing Silver Branch Warrenton Station in events on and off property, brewery dinners, tastings, tours, events, etc.
Knowledge, Skills & Qualifications
● A high degree of passion for the history and culture of beer, and for brewing a variety of quality beer from classic styles to innovative one-offs.
● 3-plus years of experience cellaring, running and maintaining a canning line, and brewing.
● Strong mechanical background and equipment operation experience.
● Ability to operate a forklift and other mechanical equipment.
● Experience producing a wide range of beer in a team setting.
● A can-do attitude and a high degree of efficiency and ability to make things happen.
● Background and experience with bookkeeping and financial recordkeeping and reporting.
● Strong aptitude for using and integrating software programs.
● Strong skills with Microsoft Excel and most other Microsoft Office products including Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Publisher.
Physical Requirements
● Ability to regularly lift a minimum of 55lbs and maneuver up to 165lbs.
● Safely operate material handling equipment for the purpose of receiving, sorting, counting, storing, staging, picking, locating, relocating, and delivering materials with accuracy.
● Comfortable working in cramped spaces and awkward positions, and in hot and cold environments for extended periods of time.
● Work in an environment with high noise levels.
● Work on wet, slippery floors.
● Work early, long hours with flexibility and the ability to work beyond normal working hours, on weekends, and in other positions temporarily, when necessary to ensure product delivery.
Salary/Hourly Rate: $18-$24/hour
